Two Flame Tango

UpComing

Milongas

What to Expect at a Milonga

Music Played in Tandas:

Music is organized into tandas (sets of 3-4 songs by the same orchestra).

Each tanda is separated by a short non-tango music break called a cortina, signaling time to change partners.

.

Silent Invitations (Cabeceo):

Partners are often invited to dance through the cabeceo, a method of making eye contact and nodding to silently agree.

This allows for smooth partner selection without pressure or awkwardness.

.

Dress Code:

Milongas often have an elegant or semi-formal dress code. Dancers typically wear outfits that reflect the sophistication of the event. Tango shoes are a must.

.

Respect for Line of Dance:

On the dance floor, dancers follow the line of dance (a counterclockwise path around the room).

Leaders navigate carefully, respecting the flow of the floor and avoiding collisions. Followers stay connected to their partner while remaining mindful of space.

Dancing the Entire Tanda:

It’s customary to dance the full set of songs in a tanda with the same partner. At the end of the tanda, it’s polite to thank your partner and leave the floor together.

.

Breaks During Cortinas:

Socializing happens during cortinas (the short break between tandas) or off the dance floor. We don’t talk on the dancefloor.

.

No Practicing on the Floor:

A milonga is for social dancing. Practicing steps, stopping mid-dance, or troubleshooting movements is reserved for practicas, not the milonga floor.

.

Variety of Partners:

While some people prefer dancing with a specific partner, milongas are an opportunity to dance with a variety of people. This helps grow your skills and connect with the community.
