Level 3:
The Art & Craft
of Tango

Learn what you can do with the language.

Fundamentals gives them the language, Double Spiral develops the body, and this class teaches them how to use all of that material creatively in a real social dance.

Join the School

Once you have a strong vocabulary and a body capable of using it, tango becomes a creative practice.

Level 3 is about The Art & Craft of Tango—taking the principles, movement, and communication developed in Levels 1 and 2 and learning to apply them to complex tango figures.

A twelve-month cycle

A Twelve-Month Curriculum

Each month we spend time with one area of tango vocabulary or musicality, giving us a full year to explore the breadth of the social dance.

January — Winter Semester

Sacadas

Learn how one dancer enters the space created by the other. We study timing, direction, displacement, and how to create enough space for a sacada to happen clearly and comfortably.

February

Calesita

Explore stillness and movement around a shared center. Calesitas develop balance, patience, axis, and the ability to continue a movement without rushing it.

March

Milonga Steps

Meet the playful vocabulary of milonga. Work with smaller steps, rhythmic movement, and structures that allow the dance to become quicker without becoming hurried.

April — Spring Semester

Barridas

Explore the relationship between the feet and the floor. Learn how barridas emerge from space, timing, and connection rather than pushing or moving your partner's foot.

May

Changes of Direction

Learn how to redirect movement while maintaining continuity through the embrace. Changes of direction open up many possibilities for improvisation and navigation.

June

Vals Steps

Explore vocabulary particularly suited to the flowing, circular quality of Argentine vals and learn how familiar tango movements transform when danced to a different rhythm.

July — Summer Semester

Changes of the Embrace

Move fluidly between open and close embrace. Learn how the embrace can expand, gather, and reorganize as the dance changes without losing connection.

August

Boleos

Explore the spiral, rebound, and timing that create boleos. We work with control and clarity so that dynamic movement can remain articulate and appropriate for social dancing.

September

Milonga Musicality

Go deeper into the rhythm of milonga. Explore lisa, traspié, rhythmic play, and how to make quick dancing feel grounded, clear, and musical.

October — Fall Semester

Ganchos

Study the geometry, timing, and communication that allow ganchos to emerge naturally from the movement rather than being placed or forced.

November

Enganches

Explore wrapping and hooking actions created through shared movement, precise pathways, and an increasingly articulate relationship between the partners' legs.

December

Vals Musicality

Finish the year inside the music. Explore phrasing, quick-quick-slow rhythms, suspension, circularity, and the distinctive feeling of dancing tango vals.

Already have tango experience?

Test Into Level 3

If you have studied tango elsewhere and already have a strong foundation, you are welcome to test into Level 3.

This class assumes comfortable social dancing and a working understanding of tango fundamentals, ochos, turns, cross-system movement, spirals, and partner communication.

Send us an email and we can help determine whether this is the right level for you.
